TUSD Celebrates Love of Reading Week

Schools throughout TUSD are planning a number of special events and activities in recognition of Love of Reading Week, which runs from Feb. 14 through 18.

Love of Reading Week is a national celebration promoting an appreciation of literature among students and adults through author readings, special presentations and other literary activities including the following:

Blenman Elementary School, 1695 N. Country Club
2/15 (1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.): Professional storyteller Mark Seversen will entertain students with oral narratives.
2/17 (9:10 a.m. to 9:25 a.m.): All students will “Drop Everything and Read.”

Brichta Elementary School, 2110 W. Brichta Dr.
2/15 (6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.): Brichta families will read, relax and enjoy cookies and milk in the library at the Pajama Read-In.

Cavett Elementary School, 2120 E. Naco Vista Dr.
2/14 (9 a.m. to 10 a.m.): Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer will read to students.
2/16 (10 a.m.): UA basketball player Channing Frye will read to students
2/17 (10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.): Mayor Bob Walkup will read to students.
2/18 (1:30 p.m.): Wilbur the Wildcat, University of Arizona mascot, will read to students.

Howell Elementary School, 401 N. Irving Rd.
2/15 (6 p.m. to 7 p.m.): Primary students and their parents will read books together in their pajamas, as well as enjoy hot cocoa and cookies in various classrooms.

Howenstine High Magnet School, 555 S. Tucson Blvd.
2/16 (6:30 p.m.): Parents will learn teaching strategies to help students with reading comprehension in the multi-purpose room.

Manzo Elementary School, 855 N. Melrose
2/15 (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.): Families will explore a variety of literacy activities including creating book marks, putting together puzzles, and exploring author websites at Family Library and Computer Night.

Maxwell Middle School, 2802 W. Anklam Rd.
2/14 – 2/18 (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.): Students will enjoy their lunch with a book and hot cocoa at the Library Café.

Menlo Park Elementary School, 1100 W. Fresno
2/11 (9:05 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.): Barbara Gowan, author of G is for Grand Canyon: an Arizona Alphabet, will read to students in the library.

Miller Elementary School, 6951 S. Camino de la Tierra
2/17 (1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.): Students will play games that are reading-related.

Naylor Middle School, 1701 S. Columbus Blvd.
2/16 (12:13 p.m. to 1:09 p.m.): Drama students will perform skits based on well-known fairytales in the library.
2/17 (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.): Parents and students will gather in the library to enjoy books and pizza for Family Literacy Night. Parents will learn techniques to engage their children in building strong literacy skills.

Oyama Elementary School, 2700 S. La Cholla Blvd.
2/16 (7:54 a.m. to 1:16 p.m.): Faculty and staff will dress as their favorite storybook character.

Robins Elementary School, 3939 N. Magnetite Ln.
2/14 (8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.): Bilingual storyteller Martin Juan Rivera will tell Southwestern, Mexican, and Native American legends to students in the library.
2/15 (8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.): Author Ken Graun will discuss his life as an astronomy writer with various classes.
2/16 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.): Pet Partners will share their love of reading and dogs with various classes.

Rose Elementary School, 710 W. Michigan Dr.
2/17 (8:10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.): Students will come to school dressed as their favorite storybook character.

Smith Elementary School, 5741 Ironwood
2/16 (9 a.m.): Black Heritage Association from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base will read to students in each classroom.

Tully Elementary Magnet School, 1701 W. El Rio Dr.
2/16 (8:24 a.m. to 1:36 p.m.): Students will come to school dressed as their favorite storybook character.

Vail Middle School, 5350 E. 16th St.
2/18 (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.): Students will read to primary students from Bonillas Elementary School in the library.

Vesey Elementary School, 5005 South Butts Rd.
2/14 to 2/18 Scholastic Book Fair
2/15 1st Grade Assembly Desert Museum: Desert Mysteries 9:30
2/15 3rd Grade Assembly Solar System 1:30
2/15 Kinder Story times: Tucson Public Library 9:30-12
2/17 2nd Grade Assembly It's a Really Big Bug Show 1:30
2/18 4/5 Grade Assemblies Mountain Men
Every day there will be volunteer readers in classrooms.

Wheeler Elementary School, 1818 Avenida del Sol
2/15 (6 p.m. to 7 p.m.): Families will work together on various literacy-based activities and read to each other at the school’s Family Literacy Night and Book Fair.

Wright Elementary School, 4311 E. Linden
2/14 (8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.): Students will read their favorite poems over the school intercom throughout the day.
2/15 (8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.): “Musical Rooms”—Throughout the day when teachers hear a predetermined cue they will switch classrooms to read their favorite book to students.
2/16 (8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.): “Stop/Drop/Read”—Throughout the day when students hear a predetermined cue they will stop what they are doing, drop to the floor, and read.
2/17 (1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.): All students will read their favorite book.
2/18 (8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.): Judi Moreillon, author of various southwest-themed books including Sing Down the Rain, will read her work to students in the library.
