TUSD Celebrates Love of Reading Week

Schools throughout TUSD are planning a number of special events and activities in recognition of Love of Reading Week, which runs from
Feb. 13 through 16. This year’s theme is “Reading Connects Our Worlds.”
Love of Reading Week is a national celebration promoting an appreciation of literature among students and adults through author readings, special presentations and other literary activities including the following:
Bloom Elementary School, 8310 E. Pima St.

2/13 (8:30 a.m.) - Grandparents Day: Grandparents are invited to meet in the library for a light breakfast. After breakfast, they will be escorted to their grandchild’s classroom

2/14 (8 a.m. to 2:12 p.m.) - Hallway Book Exchange:
Students will leave gently used books on tables set up outside of the library and pick up a new book to read. Books left on the table at the end of the day will be given to the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

2/15 (8 a.m. to 2:12 p.m.) – Dress up as your favorite storybook character:
Staff and students will dress up as one of their favorite storybook characters.

2/16 (8 a.m. to 2:12 p.m.) – Staff Day:
Teachers will be swapping classes to share their favorite books with another class.

2/17 (8 a.m. to 2:12 p.m.) – Read-In:
Students will dress up in their pajamas and share their favorite books in class.
Cavett Elementary School, 2120 E. Naco Vista Dr.

2/13-2/17 (8:25 a.m. to 2:37 p.m.): Guest readers will read to students throughout the week including Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer, KVOA anchor Martha Vasquez, and a representative from Mayor Bob Walkup’s office.

Grijalva Elementary School, 1795 W. Drexel Rd.

2/21 (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.): Author Teddi Grover-Schnurr will host a writing workshop for students and reading from her book
Buttons the Foster Bunny. All activities, including the reading, will be held in the school’s library.
Hohokam Middle School, 7400 S. Settler Rd.

2/13 – 2/17 (8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.): Guest readers will read to students throughout the week including Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer, Governing Board President Adelita Grijalva, and Pascua Yaqui Tribe and Tucson Sidewinders representatives.
Holladay Intermediate Magnet School, 1110 East 33rd Street

2/13 – 2/17 (8:20 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.) Each class is creating a Love of Reading Banner that supports the theme, “Reading Connects Our Worlds.” Marching “Book Dolls” will be displayed in the hallways – one for each book read by students. Students who give up TV for a week will earn a candy treat

2/22 (10 a.m.) – Culminating assembly to celebrate student reading goals. During Love of Reading week, students will attempt to read 850 books. Each student who reads 5 or more books to help us reach our goal will receive a free book. If our students read 250 books, they will have a popcorn party during our culminating assembly; if they reach 450 books read our 4th grade teacher will be shaved by Student Council members; if they reach 650 books read, their PE teacher will wear a dress; and if they reach their goal of 850 books read, a very enthusiastic UA fan and fourth grade teacher will wear an ASU
T-Shirt!

2/13 – 2/16 (9:23 a.m. to 3:37 p.m.) - A book fair will be held throughout the week. Student Council and Parent/Teacher Organization have been invited to volunteer. Art classes have volunteered to have a creative contest to promote the book fair through art.

2/17 (1:30 p.m.) – A guest speaker (TBA) will speak to the senior class.
Lineweaver Elementary School, 461 S. Bryant
Manzo Elementary School, 855 N. Melrose

2/13 – 2/16 (8:05 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.) - Families and community members have been invited to read to students. Several classrooms will swap teachers to read to different classrooms. Students will graph their reading progress.

2/17 (1:30 p.m.) – Read-In: Students will read in their classrooms for the last half hour of the day.
Marshall Elementary School, 9066 E. 29th St.

2/13 – 2/17 (7:55 a.m. to 2:07 p.m.) - Families and community members have been invited to read to students. For 15 minutes a day, students will do silent reading. Students from Sahuaro High School and Secrist Middle School will also read to students and classrooms will display a favorite book or character.

2/17 (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.) Annual Parent-Student Read-In – Students are encouraged to invite a parent/grandparent/friend to read at school.
Oyama Elementary School, 2700 S. La Cholla

2/13 – 2/17 (7:54 a.m. to 2:16 p.m.) - Guest readers will be at the school reading to students and participating in various activities including a Balloon Lift Off, Family Reading Night and a Dress as a Favorite Character Day. Students will write poetry and create artwork depicting a favorite book or author.
Secrist Middle School, 3400 S. Houghton Rd.
Soleng Tom Elementary School, 10520 Camino Quince

2/16 (1:15 p.m.) – National Junior Honor Society students from Secrist Middle School will read to students.

2/17 (8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) – Author Jennifer Ward will give writing presentations to students in kindergarten through fifth grade culminating in a book signing.
Valencia Middle School, 4400 W. Irvington Rd.

2/13 – 2/16 (8:50 a.m. to 3:43 p.m.) – Various activities will held including a Book Fair and door decorating. Guest readers will be at the school reading to students.

2/16 (6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) – Literacy Night: Videotape presentations of students sharing author biographies and student poetry recitations will be held along with a Harry Potter hands-on activity.

2/17 (9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) – Storyteller and songwriter Michael Roth will give presentations in the library.
