Nationally renowned Fish! speaker Deena Ebbert will run a leadership workshop and serve as the keynote speaker for TUSD Career and Technological Education’s Getting a Life Main Event from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Viscount Suite Hotel, 4855 E. Broadway.

Workshop activities will include a presentation by Ebbert to various business and community members and educators of the FISH! Philosophy, which provides a blueprint for creating a common language, vision, and structure to foster awareness of choices and goals in virtually any setting. In addition to the presentation, the workshop will feature demonstrations by high school students in nursing, photography, fashion and other CTE programs. Successful alumni will also be honored with an induction into the CTE hall of fame.

The 22 Career and Technical Education programs offered in 11 TUSD high schools and supported by 20 middle schools, strive to ensure a dynamic workforce by fully developing every student's career and academic potential. Programs prepare all students for life after high school whether it be college, military and/or the workforce and can allow students to obtain industry certification, articulated college credit, internship, leadership, and cooperative work experiences while in high school. With nearly two-thirds of all high school graduates of Career and Technical Education programs entering some form of post-secondary program, rigorous academic content tied to technical subject matter will ensure that these students will be ready for college. The FISH! Philosophy was developed in 1998 by filmmaker and ChartHouse Learning Chairman John Christensen. FISH! is based on his observations of the inspiring way in which the fishmongers of Seattle’s Pike Place Fish Market approach their work everyday.
