Fourth-grader Justin Garms, who spent his time reading rather than watching TV, will act as principal for the day from
7:49 a.m. to 1:11 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Robins Elementary
School, 3939 N. Magnetite.
Justin ignored television for a full 24 hours as a part of Robin’s “Give Up Television and Screens” challenge, also known as GUTS. As part of Love of Reading Week, GUTS challenges students to spend their spare time reading rather than watching TV or playing video games. All students who participated were entered into a drawing, with one winner chosen to be principal for the day.
As principal, Justin will meet with a representative from the Tucson Children’s Museum to learn about summer programs for students at Robins. He will also administer February’s math challenge to all second-graders. As a treat Justin will eat lunch off campus with the school’s principal, Maggie Shafer. Justin will continue with his fourth-grade work, which he will get to do at the principal’s desk.
