Over 450 students will relive history when State Rep. Tom Prezelski introduces historical elements from Tucson’s founding at an assembly on
Friday, March 5 at 8:30 a.m. in the patio at Tully Accelerated Magnet School, 1701 W. El Rio Dr.
Prezelski will be dressed as a presidio soldier of the mid-1700’s. He will introduce students to the Spanish Imperial Standard, the flag that flew over Tucson when it was founded in 1775. Following the presentation, Prezelski will speak to all fourth and fifth-grade students on the armament worn by soldiers during that period.
This presentation is part of Tully’s “Moments in Time” program, an ongoing adjunct to the school’s social studies curriculum that focuses solely on American history. Every week students are introduced to a flag from America’s past. The flag is then put in a display case in the main office for the remainder of the week, along with timelines, photographs, and other related materials. Throughout the week students and staff read short narratives during the daily announcements further describing the historical period.
