Mayor Bob Walkup will join Henry "Hank" Oyama and other dignitaries for a dedication ceremony from
10 a.m. to noon March 8 at Oyama Elementary School, 2700 S. La Cholla
Blvd.. Performances by taiko drummers and Ballet Folklorico La Pantera will be held from
9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
In addition to Mayor Walkup and Mr. Oyama, TUSD Superintendent Stan Paz, the Mexican and Japanese consuls, and numerous other officials will be on hand to speak at the ceremony.
Mr. Oyama taught at Safford Middle School and Pueblo High School, where he served as a pioneer in bilingual education. He later developed the bilingual program at Pima Community College and helped to found PCC's Hispanic Student Endowment Fund. Mr. Oyama also has participated with such community organizations as LULAC, Tucson Sister Cities and the Rotary Club of Tucson.
Oyama Elementary School opened on Feb. 3. Previously, kindergarten through fourth-grade students were temporarily located in two TUSD facilities close to the school. Kindergarten and first-grade students attended classes at Tolson Elementary School, 1000 S. Greasewood. Students in the second-, third- and fourth- grades attended school at the Ajo Service Center, 2201 W. 44th Street. Fifth-grade students were allowed to complete their fifth-grade year at the elementary school where they were enrolled during the 2001-02 school year.
