Sewell, Henry, Holladay and Johnson Elementary Schools all reduced utility costs by more than 30 percent and are eligible for Energy Star recognition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Manzo and Holladay Elementary Schools also applied for and received REAP Awards for their conservation accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2004-2005. The five top award winners demonstrated $17,000 - $29,000 annual utility savings through reduced use of electricity, natural gas, water and/or solid waste.
Doug Crockett, Assets & Energy Manager, and a staff member for the TUSD Green Team, congratulated all the participating schools and pointed out that school utility savings also benefit local taxpayers. Although “excess utility” funding will continue outside Arizona’s school revenue control limits until 2009, many people have suggested utility savings as part of TUSD’s Bright Ideas Campaign.
The Governing Board adopted a REAP Policy in 2002 with the mission that ‘Everyone in TUSD can manage energy, water and waste more wisely to improve both student and school facility performance. We all benefit by practicing better environmental and economic stewardship.’ The five-year objectives (2003-2008), administrative regulation, and online application clarify how students, staff and schools can participate.
REAP Awards are capital transfers from the Facilities Management Department to school site budgets based on demonstrated success. More information on the REAP guidelines and individual school utility data are available on TUSD’s website at
