TUSD reduced utility costs at 67 schools during 2004 to save taxpayers
$765,881 through the district’s Resources Efficiency Awareness
Program, also known as REAP. As a result, 17 TUSD schools earned a total of
$24,800 for demonstrating conservation, improving efficiency, and using renewable resources from
Jan. 1, 2004 through Dec. 31, 2004.
Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer congratulated the participating schools at the March 8 TUSD Board meeting. The following is a list of the winning schools and the monetary award they received:
Utterback Middle Magnet, $5,000; Whitmore
Elementary, $4,000; Safford Middle Magnet, $3,000;
Hudlow Elementary, Doolen Middle, and Catalina High
Magnet, $2,000 each; Davis Elementary, Hughes Elementary, Johnson Primary, Kellond Elementary, Lineweaver Elementary, Manzo Elementary, Ochoa Elementary, Robins Elementary, Sewell Elementary,
and Soleng Tom Elementary, $680 each.
Begun in 1991, REAP was created to educate students and staff on how to conserve energy, water, and waste resources. It awards winning schools twice per year with $600 to $5,000 of capital monies which can be spent on a variety of school supplies including playground equipment, cafeteria tables, etc. The amount of money awarded is determined by the amount of money a school saves on utilities, if the school has received an Energy Star label from the federal government, and if conservation is included in the school's curriculum.
