Nearly 60 Carrillo fifth-graders will present their archaeological research exhibits to the public
from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16 at La Pilita, 420 S. Main Ave. A slide show and informational discussion about the school's magnet program will follow at
Carrillo Intermediate Magnet School, 440 S. Main Ave.
The exhibits consist of models, research papers, and artwork created by the students during their studies this year, including student-created pottery in the styles of ancient native peoples like the Hohokam, Mogollon and Anasazi. Topics of the exhibit include archaeology sites around the world, the six historic layers of Tucson, and prehistoric peoples. Student docents will be on hand to greet and assist visitors.
To research for their exhibit, students participated in a seeded dig at La Pilita where they learned how to sift for artifacts, create grid lines, and use archaeological equipment. They also assisted in a dig at Old Pueblo archaeology and attended a workshop at the Arizona State Museum.
La Pilita Association is a nonprofit organization that supports the study of local history, archaeology, ethno botany and oral history through collaboration between TUSD and the City of Tucson.
