Naylor To Host Sister-to-Sister Summit for Middle School Girls

Between 50 and 100 seventh- and eighth-grade girls will participate in the Sister-to-Sister Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. March 22 at Naylor Middle School, 1701 S. Columbus Blvd.
Sponsored by the Tucson branches of the American Association of University Women, the summit will feature LaTanya Sheffield, a 1988 Olympic track and field athlete and motivational speaker; and Marty Cortez, member of the Pima Community College's governing board. Both will speak on the value of continuing education for girls.
Students will also participate in breakout discussion sessions to share opinions and seek solutions to various issues including goal setting, peer pressure, self-confidence, gender and diversity. A special session for parents will also be held. In addition to Naylor Principal Alice McBride, the association's Angie Toledo and UA students from Gamma Alpha Omega service sorority will also participate.
The association's Educational Foundation developed Sister-to-Sister Summits give girls an opportunity to talk openly about the pressures they face and share their opinions with their peers under the guidance of an experienced group leader. The American Association of University Women, or AAUW, is a national organization that promotes education and equity for all women and girls. The AAUW Educational Foundation funds pioneering research on girls and education, community action projects, and fellowships and grants for outstanding women around the globe.
