On Tuesday, March 11, TUSD Superintendent Stan Paz shared with the governing board TUSD's new accountability system. As a follow up to this meeting, on Thursday, March 13, he informed central office administrators and principals of his plan to align the administration of the district with an increased focus on schools.

Since the October 2000 launch of the BOLD! Game, a district-wide initiative to improve student achievement that includes seven goals, Superintendent Paz has maintained a laser-like focus on increasing student achievement. In order to realize the BOLD! Game, he has set out a clear focus on three goals for the district for 2003-04. These goals are:

Goal 1 - Students will demonstrate grade-level proficiency in reading.
Goal 2 - Students will demonstrate grade-level proficiency in writing.
Goal 3 - Students will demonstrate grade-level proficiency in math.

Strategies to be employed as a part of this new accountability system will include school-wide assessments administered to every student in the same grade or class at quarterly intervals. In addition, student performance in key standards will be posted quarterly with the percentage of students proficient tracked during the year. Thirdly, students who do not meet academic standards will receive decisive interventions, which may include tutoring and schedule adjustment.

In pursuit of these goals and in light of fiscal demands to reduce cost, Superintendent Paz has restructured his executive staff as a first step in this process. A review of all other central office functions is currently under way to identify possible resources that may be reallocated more directly toward schools.

Superintendent Paz's recent steps to realize the BOLD! Game have raised hopes among school leaders on the real possibility of meeting the challenging goals of raising student performance.
