National science competition winner Amanda Duron, student at Doolen Middle School, 2400 N. Country
Club, will have the opportunity to mingle with renowned scientists in May at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
Amanda competed against scores of students from across the nation in the Museum's annual Young Naturalist Awards competition. She was one of 12 students selected as a winner. Contestants were required to plan and conduct their own scientific expedition, which included devising a question, gathering data, and arriving at a conclusion on a topic of their choice. Amanda studied the geology and mining of southern Arizona in her project titled "A Comparison of the Bisbee and Morenci, Arizona Copper Ore Deposits."
Two winners were chosen in each grade, seven through 12. As a winner Amanda will receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to meet scientists of the American Museum of Natural History, take a behind-the-scenes tour, and attend an award ceremony where she will be honored. She will also receive a $500 scholarship.
