Sweep LULAC Honors for Middle Schools

Three seventh-grade students from Wakefield Middle School, 101 W. 44th St.,
were honored at a banquet held yesterday and hosted by the League of Latin American
Citizens (LULAC) and Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) for their winning art pieces.
Xavier Verdugo won first place in the LULAC/TPAC art contest, which was open to
hundreds of middle school students throughout Tucson. Xavier received a $500 savings bond
for his piece titled "Educational Hopes." Fernando Almedia took second
place for his piece "Pathways to Success" and received a $250 savings bond. Elisa
Estrella was also awarded $250 for her third place piece titled "Latina for
Hopeful Dreams."
Students also had their artwork framed and received a certificate from LULAC and TPAC.
Their work will be displayed in the front glass case of the Wakefield front office area
and published in the Wakefield school newspaper.
