In its ongoing efforts to maintain safe and healthy athletic sites, Sahuaro and Pueblo high schools will implement
TUSD’s Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, Pilot Programs beginning this month during sports practices and competitions.
Although incidents of sudden cardiac arrest, or SCA, in adolescents are rare, the possibility does exist in the scholastic and athletic setting. Overseen by TUSD’s Interscholastics Program, the program will be implemented at high school athletic practices and competitions.
District employees will be trained to recognize SCA and to provide appropriate care and defibrillation. Both schools will have a certified athletic trainer and a school nurse who will serve as joint AED program coordinators. Coordinators will communicate with TUSD’s Risk Management and Interscholastics offices to annually review program policies and procedures. Assistant principals will serve as liaisons. If successful and with donation support, this program will be implemented throughout high schools in the district. TUSD is the first district in the Pima County to pilot such a program. Maricopa Community College has a similar program in place on all its campuses.
The cost to implement an AED program is approximately $2,500 per high school or $22,500 and is currently being funded by donations. Any person seeking to make donations for the AED program can contact Sheila Baize at 232-8650.
