OMA Performing Arts Showcase to Highlight Students and Local Artists

Nearly 100 TUSD students will perform with 70 art teachers and artists from local music, theater, and dance organizations including Tucson Symphony Orchestra and the Arizona Opera Company at the Opening Minds Through the Arts, or OMA, Artist Showcase and Reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 in the Rincon High School auditorium, 421 N. Arcadia Blvd.

Other participating artists represent Zuzi Dance Theater, Theatrical Mind Theater, Live Theater Workshop, Barbea Williams Dance Troupe, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, University of Arizona College of Fine Arts. In addition, the event will include a “Meet the Artists” reception with a two-dimensional art exhibit as well as food donated by Blue House Catering, Café Terracotta, Eclectic Café, Gold Room at Westward Look Resort, Sons Bakery and Albertsons. 

The event is open to the public and proceeds will benefit the OMA program. Tickets can be purchased for $50 by calling the TUSD Fine Arts Department at 225-4900. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the show. 

The event marks the fifth year of OMA implementation in TUSD schools and celebrates the 88th birthday of Gene Jones, founder of OMA. Jones underwrote the original OMA pilot program and has been a continuous supporter of the program. 

TUSD’s OMA program was developed around brain-based learning theories designed to impact at-risk children and significantly increase student achievement. The goal of OMA is to help all students succeed by actively supporting and positively engaging students in all subjects through the arts. More information can be found at www.omaproject.org.
