Cholla Student Wins Bilingual Corrido Contest

Adriana Aguilar, student at Cholla High Magnet School, 2001
W. Starr Pass Blvd., will perform her award-winning corrido
"El Corrido de Caballo con Hambre y Sed" at the
University of Arizona's Poetry Center contest awards presentation
at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 14 in the Modern Language Building
auditorium on the University of Arizona campus.
Adriana placed first, out of over 60 entries, in the fifth
annual Corrido Contest for Arizona high school students sponsored
by the UA Poetry Center. Contestants were required to write
their own corrido, or Mexican folk song, and three were selected
as winners. The winning students will perform their corrido
with a professional musician at the awards ceremony. As the
first-place winner, Adriana also won $300.
Established in 1960, the University of Arizona Poetry Center
is a nationally renowned special collections library and archive
that houses approximately 50,000 literary items. Each year
the center sponsors numerous outreach programs, including
readings and workshops in southern Arizona schools.
