Adriana Aguilar, student at Cholla High Magnet School, 2001 W. Starr Pass Blvd., will perform her award-winning corrido "El Corrido de Caballo con Hambre y Sed" at the University of Arizona's Poetry Center contest awards presentation at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 14 in the Modern Language Building auditorium on the University of Arizona campus.

Adriana placed first, out of over 60 entries, in the fifth annual Corrido Contest for Arizona high school students sponsored by the UA Poetry Center. Contestants were required to write their own corrido, or Mexican folk song, and three were selected as winners. The winning students will perform their corrido with a professional musician at the awards ceremony. As the first-place winner, Adriana also won $300.

Established in 1960, the University of Arizona Poetry Center is a nationally renowned special collections library and archive that houses approximately 50,000 literary items. Each year the center sponsors numerous outreach programs, including readings and workshops in southern Arizona schools.
