The Mock Trial Team at Sahuaro High School, 545 N. Camino Seco, took the top
prize in the Arizona High School Mock Trial Championship held in Phoenix on March 23. As
state champions, they will advance to compete against teams from across the country at the
National High School Mock Trial Championship, to be held in St. Paul, Minnesota, May 9-12
provided they can raise $10,000 needed to make the trip in the next few weeks. This
is the first time a local team has won at the state level.
Junior Kyla Wells and sophomores Ashley Hunsaker and Peter Phillips led the talented
team, which also included four gifted freshmen: Kyle Esham, Jenna Perry, Carol Rosanelli
and Erik Stoddard. A total of 30 students participated in the 2002 Sahuaro Mock Trial
program, coached by Cathy Currier, one of this years nine finalists for the
University of Arizona/Circle K Teacher of the Year Award. Attorney-coach Lindsey Hunter
also worked extensively with the winning team.
The Mock Trial program teaches students in grades 9-12 about the law and the legal
system by participating in a simulated trial. Teams learn the facts of their fictional
case and then create trial strategies, which they put to the test first in regional
tournaments, then at the state championship. A new case arrives in early April for study
and analysis by teams advancing to the finals.
Bake sales, car washes, raffle ticket sales and community-wide fund raising is taking
place to assist the teams efforts to travel to the National Championship in May.
Editors note: Please contact the Communications Department to schedule an
interview with participating students or to see them in action as they prepare for the
national competition.
