The Careers Through Culinary Arts program, also known as
C-CAP, recently awarded Jon Hall, a student at Catalina High
Magnet School, 3645 E. Pima, a $35,500 scholarship to attend
a prestigious culinary institute.
Jon beat out students from 52 high schools across the state
for the prestigious scholarship that will allow him to train
for 15 months as a professional chef at the Scottsdale Culinary
Institute beginning in August. Jon was required to submit
an essay describing his career goals, two letters of recommendation,
and a copy of his transcript. Semifinalists and finalists
were invited to Phoenix in February and March to cook for
professional chefs who judged them on presentation, taste,
poise, and attire.
John will earn his Associate of Occupational Studies degree.
Founded in 1986, SCI boasts two campuses as well as two student-run
restaurants. Students can earn either a culinary arts degree
or a patisserie and baking certificate, both of which are
Le Cordon Bleu certified.
C-CAP is a national school-to-career program that connects
public high schools to the food service industry. It provides
students with scholarships, internships, college and career
advising, and workshops.
TUSD offers a culinary arts program at Catalina, Sahuaro
and Santa Rita high schools. Students have the opportunity
to earn both experience and Pima Community College credit
through these courses.
