TUSD Schools Feature Venues for Student Political Expression

As a way of providing constructive outlets for students to express their political views, TUSD staff and students have organized a number of special events and activities ranging from classroom discussions to rallies to help students respond to last week’s demonstrations on the upcoming vote on House Bill 4437, a federal immigration reform proposal. Below is a listing of some of the many activities:
Carson Middle School, 7777 E. Stella Rd.
April 5: Noon and 12:30 p.m. – Students will lead assemblies presenting background information on the two immigration reform bills up before congress. Students will also discuss the different cultures at the schools. After the assembly, students will pass out surveys, gather opinions and graph this information which will be posted in the school cafeteria.
Utterback Middle School, 3233 S. Pinal Vista
April 5: 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. – During classes, students will research the legislative process, the economics of immigration, the history of immigration and its impact on the arts in the U.S. At 2 p.m., an assembly will be held and TUSD Board member Adelita Grijalva will be presented with letters and petitions written by students. Student leaders will also
speak.
Pueblo Magnet High School, 3500 S. 12th Ave.
April 5 – April 7: Students will continue to use the school’s Warrior News TV report to provide a venue to express their political opinions.
Sahuaro High School, 545 N. Camino Seco
April 3 – April 7: Students will continue to dialog about immigration reform bills during social studies classes. They will also be updated on any rallies or forums.
Safford Elementary School/Safford Engineering –Technology Magnet Middle School, 200 E. 13th St.
April 3: Teachers helped students write letters to congressmen and other legislators regarding the immigration issue. Social Studies teachers encouraged dialog on the subject.
April 5: Staff from Mexican American/Raza Studies will be speaking with students about immigration issues.
Dodge Middle School, 5831 E. Pima St.
April 3-April 7: Social studies classes will continue to discuss immigration reform bills and provide opportunism for students to write letters to legislators.
Vail Middle School, 5350 E. 16th St.
April 3-April 7:
Students will continue to discuss issues related to immigration bills during social studies classes and practice writing skills through persuasive writing activities in language arts classes.
Corbett Elementary School, 5949 E. 29th St.
April 3: Staff prepared with information fact sheet regarding House Bill 4437 as well as other versions of the bill to discuss with students interested in reviewing topic.
