Next year, sixth-graders at Wakefield Middle School, 101
W. 44th St., will have the opportunity to earn money for good
grades thanks to a new program called the Lapan College Club.
The kickoff will be held from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday,
April 15 at the Tucson Heart Hospital.
The College Club is a community program that will be offered
to Wakefield students interested in earning dollars for their
future college education. Participating students will receive
$50 for every 'A' earned on their trimester report cards in
the subjects of math, science, social studies, reading, and
writing. The money will automatically go into a fund created
specifically for the student, which will be held in the Lapan
Sunshine Foundation Trust until the student begins college.
Funds earned can be used for both community colleges and universities.
All students enrolled in the sixth-grade at Wakefield next
August will be eligible to participate and will continue participating
throughout their middle and high school careers.
Each year students and their parents will receive a statement
of the student's account balance. In addition, the Lapan College
Club will provide career information and seminars as the students
reach their junior and senior years of high school.
The Lapan College Club is operated by the Foundation for
Cardiovascular Health, a non-profit organization founded in
1996. Governed by a community board, its mission is to improve
the heart health of our community. All funding comes from
grants, corporate gifts and community contributions.
