Scores of Arizona students, including those from TUSD schools, will present research projects completed using cutting-edge technology at the Geospatial Information Technologies Student Showcase from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 at Pueblo High Magnet School, 3500 S. 12th Ave., in the auditorium.

The event is an element of the “Eyes in the Sky” program which teaches students about satellite imagery, global positioning systems and computer mapping software. It enables teachers and students to use information technology tools to perform local environmental research. The program links the use of community resources and geospatial tools such as Geographical Information Systems, Global Positioning System and image analysis, with potential careers.

Students from across Arizona have been conducting research throughout the school year using these hi-tech tools. Participating TUSD schools include: Howenstine High Magnet, Sabino High, Cholla High Magnet, Sahuaro High, Tucson High Magnet, Pueblo High Magnet, Catalina High Magnet, Rincon High, Naylor Middle, and Dodge Middle Magnet. The showcase will include student presentations, a keynote about using information technology tools to study Earth, and career information for students.

“Eyes in the Sky” was developed by TERC, a non-profit education research and development organization based in Cambridge, MA. Since 1965, TERC has helped improve math, science and technology teaching and learning by creating curricula and developing applications of new technologies for use in the classroom. Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation, an independent agency of the U.S. government founded in 1950. Its mission is to promote the progress of science, to advance national health, prosperity, and welfare.
