A campus-wide student exhibition from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. April 16 at Howenstine High Magnet School, 555 S. Tucson
Blvd., will feature a dedication honoring family members of E. Jay Howenstine, the school’s namesake.
The exhibit will open up with a ceremony dedicating the school’s east ramada to Mr. Howenstine and Bill Coinman, Mr. Howenstine’s son-in-law. Ellen Coinman, Mr. Howenstine’s daughter, and her son John will be on hand for the dedication. Ellen and John Coinman donated the funds for the ramada’s construction. Students in the Building Technology class assisted in the construction of the ramada while art students designed and fabricated tile murals.
Exhibited projects will highlight the school’s magnet focus, service learning, and will include a house constructed for Habitat for Humanity, an informational brochure on pet care for the Humane Society, and a public art at the Tucson Museum of Art. The exhibition will close with a live performance by students in the American Sign Language classes who traveled to the Disneyland resort for Deaf Awareness Day and performed several songs in American Sign Language.
Howenstine High Magnet School opened its doors in 1955 and was named after E. Jay Howenstine, founder of the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults, and former coordinator for TUSD’s health council.
