Several students at Catalina Magnet High School, 3645 E. Pima, came away as
winners from two recent state culinary competitions. Their culinary teacher is Connie
Campbell.
Seniors Lisette Toro and Linda Valdillez each won a $3,000 scholarship at the 10th
Annual Arizona Careers through Culinary Arts Program competition, held April 6 at
MetroTech High School in Phoenix. They may apply the scholarships toward tuition at the
culinary school or program of their choice. Students are chosen to compete based on their
academic records and a handwritten 150-250 word essay on why they want to pursue a career
in the hospitality industry and their desire for continued education. The final
competition involved preparing and presenting to judges a gourmet menu of Poulet Chasseur
(hunters chicken) with Chateau Potatoes and Crêpes Sucrées with Crème
Pâtissière and Sauce au Chocolat in just two hours, followed by interviews.
In addition, Megan Ryan, Lisette Toro, Linda Valdillez, Chris Wezdenko and Deanne Zeis
took home the silver medal in the culinary competition at the Family, Careers and
Community Leaders of America contest, held April 2 at the Phoenix Civic Plaza.
