Daniel Leake, a junior at Pueblo High Magnet School, 3500 S. 12th Ave.,
has been named a semifinalist in the College Boards National Hispanic Recognition
Program (NHRP).
The NHRP selected the 4,000 highest scoring students on the Preliminary SAT/National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as semifinalists from a nationwide total of
119,000 self-identified Hispanic high school juniors who took the test last October.
The grade point averages (GPAs) of semifinalists will be considered for the final
determination of which students are named as Honorable Mention (GPA 3.0-3.49) or Scholar
(GPA 3.5 or higher). Leake and other semifinalists will be notified of their final
designation in September 2002.
Being selected by the NHRP will give students the opportunity to hear from colleges
that are particularly interested in communicating with academically talented students of
Hispanic heritage. As a recognition program, there is no monetary award associated with
this selection; however, the College Board provides the names of students selected as
Scholars and Honorable Mention by NHRP to colleges and universities. Many of these
institutions actively recruit these students and offer financial support based on the
College Boards recognition.
