For the third year in a row, students from Sahuaro High School, 545 N. Camino Seco, have been named state mock trial champions and will go on to compete in the 2004 National High School Mock Trial Championship,
May 6 through 9 in Orlando, Florida.
For nationals, mock trial teams are given a legal case one month before the tournament. Teams must prepare as both prosecution and defense and cases are heard before actual judges. This year Sahuaro's winning team members are: Kyle Esham, Jenna Perry, Ashley Hunsaker, Jessica Toal, Lindsey Kugler, Caitlin Simonson, and Robbie
Encinas.
To qualify for nationals, Sahuaro had to first win the state competition on March 27 at the Sandra Day O'Connor Federal Courthouse in Phoenix. This year's win was the third in a row for Sahuaro, the only Pima county school to ever represent Arizona at the national tournament.
Begun in 1984, the national mock trial competition was created to give high school students a better understanding of the law, as well as encourage self-confidence, critical-thinking skills, and oral communication. Over 40 states participate in the tournament annually.
