Local author and illustrator Gerald Dawavendewa will visit Rogers Elementary School,
6000 E. 15th St., from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29. Presentations
will be made to students from 11:30-2:30 p.m. and to families from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Dawavendewa, Hopi-Cherokee, works as a graphic designer with the Lunar Laboratory at
the University of Arizona. He will talk with students and their families about the
artistic and writing processes used in the creation of his book, The Butterfly Dance,
which chronicles one important day as seen through the eyes of a young Hopi girl named
Sihumana.
This presentation is made possible through a mini-grant from the New York-based Ezra
Jack Keats Foundation.
