Santa Rita High School, 3951 S. Pantano Road, has won first place in a national
contest sponsored by the Channel One Network for students participation in Habitat
for Humanity Tucson. The first-place prize is a live concert by Maverick recording artist
Michelle Branch, to be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 29, in the schools newly
remodeled auditorium.
The school won the competition, whose theme was "How Do You Make a Difference in
the World?" because of its partnership with Tucsons Habitat for Humanity High
School Building Program. Santa Rita High School was the first in the country to build a
Habitat for Humanity house on its campus and then move it to the permanent home site.
Students have built one new house every year for the past 10 years.
The Channel One Network broadcasts a 10-minute daily news program, Channel One News,
to middle and high schools across the country. Since its first broadcast in 1990, Channel
One News has garnered more than 150 news and educational programming honors, including
the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award.
