Tucson High Teacher Wins National Award

The National Association for Sport and Education, also known
as NASPE, recently named Tucson High Magnet School teacher
and coach Gary Lewis Physical Education Teacher of the Year
for the high school division.
The announcement was made at the 2004 NASPE annual convention
held March 30 through April 3 in New Orleans. The Teacher
of the Year award is broken down into three categories: elementary,
middle, and high school. Applicants are required to have a
minimum of five years experience teaching physical education,
have a degree in and be certified as a physical education
teacher, and be currently teaching K-12 physical education.
Recipients are chosen based on their teaching methodologies,
service to the profession, and continued participation in
professional development opportunities.
NASPE is a non-profit organization with a membership of over
18,000 professionals in the physical fitness and activity
fields. The organization’s goal is to strengthen basic
knowledge about sport and physical education in order to improve
academic performance, social reform and the health of individuals
throughout schools and communities across the country.
