The Careers Through Culinary Arts program, also known as C-CAP,
recently awarded three seniors at Catalina High Magnet School,
3645 E. Pima, a total of $76,000 in scholarships to further
their culinary education.
Two of the students, Samantha Strand who received $28,000
and Bryce Ward who received $35,500, will use the scholarship
money to attend Scottsdale Culinary Institute. The third student,
Taylor Reed, received $12,500 and will attend Walnut Hill
College in Philadelphia.
The students beat out students from 51 high schools across
the state for the prestigious scholarships. Participants were
required to submit an application packet that included an
essay, recommendation letters, and a copy of his or her transcript.
Twenty-five semifinalists competed in February with 22 participants
continuing on to the final round. On April 8, finalists were
invited to Phoenix to cook for professional chefs who judged
them on presentation, taste, poise, and attire.
C-CAP is a national school-to-career program that connects
public high schools to the food service industry. It provides
students with scholarships, internships, college and career
advising, and workshops.
TUSD offers a culinary arts program at Catalina, Sahuaro
and Santa Rita high schools. Students have the opportunity
to earn both experience and Pima Community College credit
through these courses.
