Students will hold a walk-a-thon for a teacher’s niece who has Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) from 8:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. May 1 at Hudlow Elementary School, 502 N. Caribe.

About 350 students will participate in the walk-a-thon on the school’s walking path. Each grade level will walk at a scheduled time. Students hope to raise $700, which will go towards the A-T Children’s Project, to research for a cure or possible life-improving therapies for Kati Leasure, who has been diagnosed with Ataxia-Telangiectasia, a rare, progressive, neurodegenerative childhood disease that affects the brain and other body systems. There is currently no cure for this disease. Kati lives in Colorado and is the niece of first grade teacher Trish Miller. Mrs. Miller has been teaching at Hudlow for nine years.

The Hudlow Student Council sponsors a community project every year. This year, they decided to raise funds for Kati after Mrs. Miller shared with them information relating to her particular disability. Pictures of Kati are displayed all around the school. The Student Council cut out walking feet and placed them along the halls to remind fellow students of the walk-a-thon. All the students are talking about Kati and are motivated to raise all they can for her. Having a child's face and story to connect to this childhood disease has made the event very personal and has captured the students’ hearts.
