A sculptured pony specially created for the Ponies Del Pueblo
project will be unveiled during the “Dog and Pony Show”
at 2 p.m. May 4 at ArtWORKS! Academy’s classroom and
studio space at El Con Mall (next to Robinsons May), 3601
E. Broadway Blvd.
A life-size pony titled “Star,”
decorated by ArtWORKS! students, will be presented and displayed
at the mall as part of Ponies Del Pueblo
project. Along with the pony, a pack of ceramic wild dogs
will also be exhibited.
Ponies del Pueblo, a philanthropic
project coordinated by the Tucson-Pima Arts Council, teams
up local businesses, governments, private foundations, and
individuals with local art and service nonprofit organizations
who together choose a local or regional artist to decorate
a pony. The ArtWORKS! pony is sponsored by Tucson-Pima Arts
Council and Tucson Lifestyle Magazine.
Various locations throughout Tucson and Pima
County are displaying the equine art pieces from March 15
through June 30. The ponies will be displayed together July
15 through Oct. 30 at several locations and then sold at auction
Nov. 2, 2003 at The Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa to benefit
the arts and social service non-profit organizations serving
Tucson and Pima County.
ArtWORKS! Academy, a collaborative effort among
TUSD, the Tucson-Pima Arts Council, the City of Tucson, and
private business owners of El Con Mall, is an alternative
education program that targets students who are artistically
talented but have struggled to commit academically to schoolwork.
The students meet their academic requirements to complete
high school while working with professional artists to produce
hand-painted tiles and custom-painted furniture for show and
sale in the adjoining gallery and store.
