Hispanic Students to be Recognized
for Outstanding Achievements

TUSD's Hispanic Studies Department will honor outstanding students at the first
Hispanic Student Recognition Program, to be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the
Tucson Convention Center Grand Ballroom, 260 S. Church Ave.
"El Orgullo del Pueblo" will recognize more than 400 high school students
from throughout the district in four categories: academics, athletics, fine arts and
community service. Guest speakers will include Congressman Jim Kolbe and Frank D. Alvarez,
president of the Arizona State Board of Education and CEO of TMC HealthCare. Davis
Bilingual Magnet Elementary Schools student mariachi group and Rincon High
Schools flute ensemble, Arbolada, will provide entertainment. Pueblo High Magnet
School freshman Jessica Rojas will sing the National Anthem.
Ten students each will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Cox Communications: Isaac
Castorena, Victoria Hinojos, William Thor Morales, Federico Peralta, Alexandra Perez,
Vanessa Romero, Roman Tellez, Sussette Torres, Rachel Toscano, and Carlos Valentin.
Another ten students each will receive a $500 scholarship from TMC HealthCare: Gilda
Castillo, Carmelu Cortez, Richard Gallego, Zandra Garcia, Kenna Gomez, Jeremy King, Sarah
Namdarian, Jessica Olivarria, Cynthia Ramirez and Jesus Valenzuela.
"Educational risk factors for Hispanic youth exceed those of all other ethnic
groups in the United States," says Ray Chavez, assistant director of TUSDs
Hispanic Studies Department. "We need to recognize students who achieve excellence
and their parents who support them for a job well done!"
