Over 350 Latino Students To Be Honored At Ceremony

TUSD's Mexican-American/Raza Studies Department will honor over 350 outstanding students at the fourth annual Latino Student Recognition Program, to be held from
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, in the student union main ballroom on the University of Arizona
campus.
The event will recognize high school juniors and seniors from throughout the district in four categories: academics, athletics, fine arts and community service. In addition, seven students will receive $500 scholarships for post-high school education. Scholarship recipients will be: Sandra Ruiz, Cholla; Verónica Saldivar, Teenage Parent Program; Nadia Orozco and Charise Talamantes, Tucson High; Lizette Williams, Rincon; and, Felina De Luna and Alejandra Torres, Pueblo.
The speaker of the evening will be Raul Aguirre, president of REA Communications, a local Hispanic marketing firm. Other attendees include University of Arizona President Peter Likins, TUSD Deputy Superintendent Patti Lopez, Pima County Supervisors Ramon Valdez and Richard Elias, and dean of the University of Arizona’s College of Humanities Charles Tatum. Pueblo High Magnet School’s student mariachi group will provide entertainment and Pueblo senior Jessica Rojas will sing the national anthem.
The Mexican American/Raza Studies Department was created to promote the understanding and appreciation of cultural similarities and differences that exist within our communities.
