TUSD’s African American Studies Department will honor 620 outstanding students at the nineteenth annual African American Student Recognition Program which will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9, in the student union grand ballroom on the University of Arizona campus.

The event will recognize middle and high school students who have met academic and attendance criteria and have achieved distinction in fine arts, athletics, and community service. In addition, three scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors.

The African American Student Recognition Scholarship, worth $1,000 for post-secondary education, will be awarded to two students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment toward learning and a desire to further their education, achieving distinguished notable academic goals while overcoming obstacles that might have derailed less motivated individuals.

The Alice V. Haynes African American Student Recognition Scholarship, worth $2,000, will be award to a student with a minimum GPA of 3.5 who intends to study at a four-year university or college. The WEB Du Bois Memorial Scholarship, worth $3,000, will be awarded by the University of Arizona’s College of Humanities to a student who plans a major in the College. Winners will be announced at the event.

Attendees will include University of Arizona President Peter Likens, dean of the College of Humanities Charles Tatum, and TUSD Deputy Superintendent Patti Lopez.

Sponsored by the TUSD African American Studies Department, the awards banquet has been held for the past 18 years. The department provides direct services to African American students, equips TUSD personnel to better educate African American students, and empowers parents to take an active role in their student's academic success.
