This month, two TUSD schools will host special events to honor Tucson’s rich Mexican and Hispanic heritage:

Roskruge Bilingual Middle Magnet School, 501 E. Sixth St., will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a 16 de septiembre assembly at 2 and 2:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. Los Pumas de Roskruge Mariachi and Las Estrellas Folklórico Group will provide entertainment.

"Mariachi music and folklórico dances represent the great mestizo and European influences in our culture and music," explains Roskruge Principal Theresa Roybal. "September 16 has historical significance and demonstrates to our students that because of Mexico’s independence from Spain, we are where we are today."

Tucson High Magnet School, 400 N. Second Ave., will host two performances of Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Pińata Woman and Other Superhero Girls Like Me at noon and 1:40 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. TUSD’s Hispanic Studies Department teamed with Borderlands Theater to present the play by Luis Alfaro and Lisa Peterson, which depicts five young Latinas in search of ways to express themselves through journal writing.

"This play presents positive role models to nurture Latina students’ self-esteem and identity," says Hispanic Studies Department’s Ray Chavez. "It also cultivates a deeper understanding and appreciation of ethnic diversity among non-Latino students."
