David Edwards V, a freshman at University High
School, was one of forty students selected from throughout the country to compete in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC) in Washington D.C.,
October 2003.
David, along with former classmate Tyler Kirkland, were selected based on their 8th grade experiment
Which enzyme works best to reduce grease in a grease trap: liquid or solid? Students are nominated by local science fair directors and the initial participants number around 6000. DCYSC is a competition that was created in 1999 to combat American students’ diminishing interest in science and math. Targeting 5th through 8th graders, DCYSC entrants are judged on their problem solving, communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
The 40 finalists will travel all expenses paid to Washington D.C. to compete against each other through a series of team challenges and oral presentations for more than $100,000 worth of scholarships. Before the judging concludes, finalists will present their original science fair projects.
The Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge’s theme this year is “100 years of flight” and will be taped for broadcast on the Discovery Channel later this year.
