Pima County Assessor Rick Lyons will be the guest speaker at a 31st anniversary celebration for
Lyons School, 7555 E. Dogwood, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 in the school’s library.
Mr. Lyons will speak on behalf of his mother Nan Lyons, the school’s namesake, who passed away last year. Mrs. Lyons was TUSD’s first female school board member, serving from 1954 to 1964, and her tireless efforts ensured that every new school built in the district had a library. Her legacy continues to enrich the lives and enhance the education of all children in the Tucson area.
In her honor, the Lyons family has donated $6,100 to start the Nan Lyons Library fund. This fund will be used to buy library books, especially in the area of history, Mrs. Lyons’ favorite subject. The school will dedicate the history section of its library to her and hang her picture that night.
Gudrun Godare, former Lyons’ librarian, will also be honored. Ms. Godare served the Lyons library for 31 years before retiring this past June. She has taught workshops on literacy around the state and is a Tucson Area Reading Council Program Development Chair. She continues to work as substitute in the school’s library.
The celebration will continue with homemade Mexican food and entertainment including a jumping castle, belly bumpers, and a book walk. All community members are invited to attend.
