Home > News & Events > Press Releases > News Release TUSD Students Rally Support for Recovery EffortsNEWS RELEASE Contact: Estella Zavala or Susan Cergol, 225-6437 Students throughout TUSD have rallied support for recovery efforts in New York and Washington, D.C., through numerous fund-raising and patriotic activities: Brichta Elementary School, 2110 W. Brichta Dr.: Student Council held a one-day penny drive on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and raised more than $1,100. Second-grader Julian Martinez contributed $62 that he had been saving to buy a Nintendo game. Ford Elementary School, 8001 E. Stella Rd.: Students showed their patriotic spirit last week by decorating the schools fence with strips of red, white and blue cloth to read "We [heart shape] USA." The fence art will remain on display through Oct. 5. Grijalva Elementary School, 1795 W. Drexel Rd.: Students created an American flag on the schools fence using red, white and blue ribbons; to remain on display for the next few months. Lawrence Elementary School, 4850 W. Jeffrey Rd.: Students began a "Donation for the Nation" Penny Drive at a Sept. 14 Remembrance Rally, to continue through Nov. 16. The money hasnt yet been counted, but the jar currently weighs more than 60 pounds. Marshall Elementary School, 9066 E. 29th St.: Students took the initiative to collect money for the American Red Cross and raised $579. Miller Elementary School, 6951 S. Camino de la Tierra: Students held a daily bake sale of goods provided by parents the week of Sept. 17. Funds raised ($1,458) were matched by Compass Bank, bringing Millers grand total to $2,916.
