Talented TUSD middle school students have a new and unusual venue for expressing
themselves in the visual arts, in writing and in public speaking: the Pima County Juvenile
Court, 2225 E. Ajo Way. The debut exhibit of paintings by students at Wakefield Middle
School, 101 W. 44th St., will open with a reception at 11 a.m. Friday,
Oct. 12
The show features the work of 35 students in teacher Alta Carrillos art classes.
Students created brilliantly colored acrylic still-life paintings that reflect their
studies of the artwork of Matisse, Cézanne and Picasso and wrote a brief description of
each painting.
The opening reception will allow students to present their work in a public forum,
giving them an opportunity to practice their public speaking skills. In addition, they
will tour the juvenile courts in action and have a chance to speak with judges.
The Pima County Juvenile Court site is the second such exhibition space available to
TUSD student artists. High school students have shown their artwork at the Courthouse
Gallery in the Pima County Superior Court, 110 W. Congress St., since 1997.
