Elementary student artwork and performances will be highlighted
during an event to support the Lights on Afterschool!
campaign, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 9,
at Park Place Mall, 5870 E. Broadway Blvd., near
the Food Court.
The community is invited to student-performed
events that include a puppet show, musical theater, magicians
and a poetry reading. An art gallery of student’s work
will also be displayed. Invited guests include Gov. Janet
Napolitano, Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl, District Attorney
Barbara LaWall, State Superintendent Tom Horne, Mayor Bob
Walkup, and all of the TUSD Governing Board members.
Lights on Afterschool! is a national
campaign for the awareness of after school programs to keep
kids safe, help working families, and improve academic achievement.
The campaign draws attention to their need for support to
facilitate keeping their doors open and their lights on. After
school programs around the nation will join in the Oct. 9th
celebration.
All participating students take part in fine
arts activities through Project Shine! Funded by the U.S.
Department of Education through its 21st Century Community
Learning Program, Project Shine! is an arts-infused after
school, Saturday, and summer program that provides a positive
alternative to the negative influences of drugs, violence
and poverty. Based on the principle that participation in
the arts often gives children their first opportunity to be
successful and feel good about themselves, the goal of the
project is to help at-risk students succeed by developing
skills and interest in lifelong learning.
Project Shine! is available at Corbett Elementary,
5949 E. 29th St.; Davidson Elementary, 3915 E. Ft. Lowell;
Howell Elementary, 401 N. Irving Ave.; and Wright Elementary,
4311 E. Linden.
