Parents, students and faculty will participate in a pep assembly marking the award of a $500,000 21st Century Community Learning Center grant from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Oct. 7 at Wakefield Middle School, 101 W. 44th St.

As part of Wakefield’s efforts to increase math and reading scores, the five-year grant will be used to offer a variety of after-school programs including Wright Flight, chess, folklorico classes as well as ethnic club and parent education activities. One of the first programs to be implemented is Wakefield Knights, which will provide academic tutoring opportunities, family programs, youth development, and other enrichment activities with the overall goals of increasing student achievement (in math, reading, and writing) and improving student attendance.

The 21st Century Grant is a US Department of Education grant project to provide expanded learning opportunities for students in a safe, drug free and supervised environment. The grant provides for the 21st Century Community Learning Center program to help families and communities keep their children safe and smart.
