Student musicians from TUSD middle and high schools throughout the district will perform in a joint youth concert with Tucson Junior Strings and the Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Palo Verde High Magnet School, 1302 S. Avenida Vega. (For the purposes of videotaping, photography and interviews, the media also is invited to attend a pre-concert rehearsal from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.)

The concert will feature classical arrangements from Mozart, Brahms and Holst as well as traditional Brazilian arrangements featuring a variety of dances and cultural instruments.

Tucson Junior Strings, a private, nonprofit organization under the direction of Dennis Bourret for the past 30 years, offers a complete string orchestral program to area students aged 6-18, including many from throughout TUSD. The program consists of six chamber orchestras organized according to musical accomplishment rather than age, seniority or school orchestra placement

The Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra of Sao Paulo, Brazil, features the musical talents of youth aged 10-16. Founder and director Gretchen Miller, a graduate of TUSD’s Rincon High School and the University of Arizona, has taught, conducted, performed and recorded in Brazil since completing postgraduate studies in London.
