Creating a Red Ribbon Week Without Violence

Schools throughout TUSD are planning a number of special events and activities designed to reduce and prevent drug abuse and violence, in recognition of National Week Without Violence and Red Ribbon Week.

Week Without Violence, celebrated Oct. 14-20 this year, is led by YWCAs around the world to emphasize alternatives to family violence, gun violence, violence linked to racism and bigotry and violence in the media. Red Ribbon Week, celebrated throughout TUSD Oct. 22-26, is a grassroots anti-drug education campaign commemorating the late DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who lost his life in the fight against drugs.

TUSD activities include:

Catalina High Magnet School, 3645 E. Pima: Red Ribbon Week will be highlighted on the school’s marquee, and students will participate in a drug awareness poster contest.

Dietz Elementary School, 7575 E. Palma: The school will celebrate October as Peace Month with a neighborhood peace march, beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Fort Lowell Elementary School, 5151 E. Pima: Classes will hold lessons on diversity appreciation, peace building and other Red Ribbon themes the week of Oct. 15. Students, parents, family members and neighbors will hold a peace march beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Fruchthendler Elementary School, 7470 E. Cloud Rd.: Lessons will focus on violence prevention and making positive, healthy choices, and students will wear red ribbons throughout Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 22-26.

Gale Elementary School, 678 S. Gollob Rd.: Students will create and wear badges to mark Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 22-26.

Hohokam Middle School, 7400 S. Settler Rd.: Former NFL wide receiver Rod Barksdale will speak to students about the importance of saying "no" to drugs and making positive life choices from 10:10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. Jay Dobyns, special undercover agent with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, will address students from 9:10-10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. Students, teachers, parents and neighboring Pasqua Yaqui community members will participate in a mile-long parade from the school to Potam Park from 9:15-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26.

Hudlow Elementary School, 502 N. Caribe: Lessons will be taught about Enrique "Kiki" Camarena and the origin of Red Ribbon Week, and students will participate in a "My Future is Bright, I’m Drug Free" essay contest throughout the week of Oct. 22-26.

Lynn/Urquides Elementary School, 1573 W. Ajo Way: Students, faculty and parents will tie red and blue ribbons on the fence along Ajo Way to indicate the students’ decision not to use drugs and a continued promise to work toward building peace, and pledges will be signed promoting healthy habits. Activities will be held from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 21-23.

Roberts Elementary School, 4355 E. Calle Aurora: A Red Ribbon Week kick-off assembly will be held from 1:30-2:25 Monday, Oct. 22. Lessons on Red Ribbon themes will be held throughout the week of Oct. 22-26.
