Students at Carrillo Magnet Elementary School, 440 S. Main Ave., will help
dedicate the restored mural at La Pilita, across the street at 420 S. Main, from 9
a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 13.
The gallery at La Pilita, featuring an exhibit of smaller murals completed by Carrillo
students under the direction of art teacher Martha Phinney, will be open for this special
event, along with a small store selling folklore publications about Barrio Viejo and other
items of local interest.
With funds from a grant received by La Pilita Association from the Tucson Pima Arts
Council, students worked with artist Carlos Valenzuela to restore the original mural on
the south side of the building.
La Pilita Association is a nonprofit organization that supports the study of local
history, archaeology, ethnobotany and oral history through collaboration between TUSD and
the city of Tucson.
