TUSD will present two events this month for Americas Safe Schools Week, Oct.
14-20:
· "Preventing School Violence: Spread the Word,"
a diversity and violence-prevention seminar sponsored by the Middle School Drug Prevention
and Safety Coordinators of area school districts, will be offered at Wakefield Middle
School, 101 W. 44th St., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in
the school library.
Four students from each of six TUSD middle schools Doolen, Mansfeld, Maxwell,
Naylor, Townsend and Wakefield will join student representatives from Sunnyside and
Amphitheatre school districts to learn ways to prevent school violence and to formulate a
student-led plan to educate their peers at each of their schools.
· On the following day, the Southern Arizona Safe Schools
Coalition will present a school safety conference from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct.
17, at The Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway. The conference will provide a forum for
participants to discuss and identify new ways to think about school safety, learn to help
young people rebound from adversity and address the local impact of safety issues on our
children.
TUSD Superintendent Stan Paz is a scheduled speaker, along with Dr. Dennis Embry,
national expert on violence prevention; Dr. Ron Stevens, executive director of the
National School Safety Center; and Sgt. Robert Holliday of the Tucson Police Department. A
panel of local educators and students also will lead discussions and answer questions.
