TUSD Schools Mark Red Ribbon Week With Activities

Schools throughout TUSD are planning a number
of special events and activities designed to reduce and prevent
drug abuse and violence, in recognition of Red Ribbon Week,
which runs from Oct. 27 through Oct 31.
Red Ribbon Week, celebrated throughout TUSD
is a grassroots anti-drug education campaign commemorating
the late DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who lost his life in
the fight against drugs.
Schools having theme days all week include:
Utterback Magnet Middle, 3233 S. Pinal Vista
Hudlow Elementary, 502 N. Caribe
Van Buskirk Elementary, 725 E. Fair St.
Henry Elementary, 650 N. Igo Way
Blenman Elementary, 1695 N. Country Club
Schumaker Elementary, 501 N. Maguire
Rose Elementary, 710 W. Michigan Dr.
Various themes include:
“Tie One on Against Drugs”: students will wear
neck ties or bolo ties.
“Sock it to Drugs”: students will wear crazy socks.
“United We Stand Against Drugs”: students will
wear clothes decorated with flags, and red, white and blue.
“Too Cool to Do Drugs”: students will wear sunglasses.
“Team Up Against Drugs”: students will wear their
favorite team jersey or uniform.
“Put a Cap on Drugs”: students will wear caps
or funny hats.
Specific TUSD activities include:
Blenman Elementary, 1695 N. Country Club:
Oct. 28: Holiday safety kickoff with TPD
from 1 to 1:30 p.m. (grades K-2) and 1:35 to 2:15 p.m. (grades
3-5.)
Bonillas Basic Curriculum Elementary, 4757
E. Winsett:
Oct. 23: RRW assembly at 9 a.m. with School
Resource Officer.
Carillo Magnet School, 772 S. Main Ave.:
Oct. 27-31: School counselor will present
to each class the history of RRW and the effects of drugs
and alcohol on the body.
Davis Bilingual Magnet, 500 W. St. Mary’s
Rd.:
Oct. 20: RRW poster contest assembly from
8:30 to 9 a.m. Students will present their drug-free posters
and winners will be selected. Kindergarteners and first graders’
posters will illustrate Halloween safety tips. Second and
third graders’ posters will illustrate stranger safety.
Fourth and fifth grader’s posters will illustrate why
to say no to drugs, how to say no, and the difference between
positive and negative peer-pressure.
Oct. 27: Halloween Safety Tips assembly with
the School Resource Officer and McGruff the crime prevention
dog from 8:30 to 9 a.m.
Fruchthendler Elementary, 7470 E. Cloud
Rd.:
Oct. 27-31: Students, staff and faculty will
wear red ribbons. Banner displayed in front of the school.
Gale Elementary, 678 S. Gollob Rd., and
Van Horne Elementary, 7550 E. Pima St.:
Oct. 27-31: Students, staff and faculty will
wear red ribbons.
Hohokam Middle School, 7400 S. Settler Rd.:
Oct. 27: Drexel Fire Dept. will demonstrate
a mock rescue of a student on drugs to sixth graders.
Oct. 29: Wade Colwell, grandson of Anthony
Quinn, will perform Funkamental songs, rap song recreations
that present a positive message, and give a motivational speech
to eighth graders.
Oct. 30: Rod Barksdale (former Raiders and
Cowboys football player) will speak about life goals and the
importance of continuing your education to seventh graders.
Hudlow Elementary, 502 N. Caribe:
Oct. 27-31: Student Council will make posters
to post in cafeteria each day. Each student will make a pledge
not to take drugs and decorate a star. Stars will be made
into a mural.
Oct. 31: ‘Reach for the Stars, Not
Drugs’ essay contest.
Jefferson Park Elementary, 1701 E. Seneca:
Oct. 27-31: Students will make anti-drug
stickers and posters, learn about alternatives to drugs and
the history of RRW, create a paper quilt, and make drug-free
pledges.
Kellond Elementary, 6606 E. Leigh Dr.:
Oct. 27-31: Students and their teachers will
brainstorm and compile a list of healthy alternatives to drugs.
The lists will be posted in the cafeteria and students will
create illustrations using these ideas to post throughout
the school. Students will also pledge to make healthy choices
in their lives by avoiding tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and violence.
Lawrence Intermediate, 4850 W. Jeffery Rd.:
Oct. 24: RRW assembly at 8:40 a.m. with students
reciting RRW pledge.
Oct. 28: Students will tie red ribbons to
south fence.
Oct. 29: Anti-drug student poster contest.
Miller Elementary, 6951 S. Camino de la
Tierra:
Oct. 28: Assembly introducing RRW with the
School Resource Officer presenting.
Oct. 27-31: Students will wear red clothing
and ribbons. At the end of the week the classroom with the
most red all week will win an ice cream party. Each class
will also create an anti-drug poster for a school competition.
Oyama Elementary, 2700 S. La Cholla:
Oct. 27-31: Student-made origami cranes with
messages of peace written inside will be displayed in the
planter in the school’s entranceway. Also, students
will draw a picture or write an essay describing ‘I
have better things to do with my time than drugs, alcohol
or violence/gangs.’
Roberts Elementary, 4355 E. Calle Aurora:
Oct. 20: Assembly with a group of students
teaching the others about the origins of RRW. Also, students
will vote on the best anti-drug pledge, previously written
by each classroom, and the chosen pledge students will say
each morning of RRW.
Rose Elementary, 710 W. Michigan Dr.:
Oct. 27-31: Door decorating contest with
a Halloween/anti-drug theme.
Roskruge Bilingual Magnet, 501 E. Sixth St.:
Oct. 24: RRW Field Day from 9 to 11 a.m.
(Students will participate in an outdoor rotation which will
expose them to activities and presentations provided by TPD,
TFD, and MADD as well as Roskruge staff.)
Schumaker Elementary, 501 N. Maguire:
Oct. 29: Red Assembly with speakers from
the UA athletic department speaking on how to stay away from
drugs at 9 a.m. (grades K-2) and 9:30 a.m. (grades 3-5)
Valencia Middle, 4400 W. Irvington:
Oct. 27-31: Student performed RRW rap songs
will be aired on Jaguar News each day.
