TUSD parents are invited to discuss school safety, gang activity and drug use during the annual Parent Workshop organized by TUSD’s Department of School Safety and Security and the Arizona State Gang Task Force
from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 3 in the auditorium at Pueblo High Magnet School, 3500 S. 12th
Ave.
TUSD’s Department of School Safety and Security officer Kathy Gutierrez and Steve Vildusea of the Arizona Gang Task Force will discuss safety concerns and provide information in both English and Spanish on how to recognize indications of drug use or gang involvement among students. A question and answer session will follow.
TUSD’s Department of School Safety and Security encompasses a wide variety of safety and security concerns, from the physical security of the school sites and grounds to violence prevention and student and staff safety. School Safety officers promote crisis prevention and educate students, parents, and staff about school safety techniques and coordinate their efforts closely with law enforcement and public safety agencies. The department’s cooperative and integrated approach has become a model for other school districts in the United States. Officers have provided over 1,000 presentations to parents, staff, and community groups.
The State Gang Task Force, also known as the Gang Intelligence and Team Enforcement Mission or GITEM, was created by the Arizona State Legislature in 1994 to assist criminal justice agencies statewide with criminal gang enforcement and investigative strategies. The State Gang Task Force brought together law enforcement and prosecution agencies from state, county, municipal, federal and tribal jurisdictions in a coordinated, intelligence-driven approach to deal with gangs on a large scale.
