 TUSD Schools Mark Red Ribbon Week With Activities

Schools throughout TUSD are planning a number of special events and activities designed to reduce and prevent drug abuse and violence, in recognition of Red Ribbon Week, which runs from Oct. 21 through Nov. 1.

Red Ribbon Week, celebrated throughout TUSD is a grassroots anti-drug education campaign commemorating the late DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who lost his life in the fight against drugs. TUSD activities include:

1. Hudlow Elementary School, 502 N. Caribe:

Oct. 23 – Oct. 31: Students will create a banner with red hand prints "United We Stand for a Drug Free Land" and the words to hang in the hallway.
Oct. 23: Students will wear red ribbons all day
Oct. 24: Theme – "Team Up Against Drugs"; students will wear favorite team jerseys
Oct. 25: Theme – "Put a Cap on Drugs"; students wear an interesting hat
Oct. 29: Theme – "Red, White and Blue Day" students wear red, white and blue

1 p.m. - UA Athlete speakers to talk to students about drug awareness

2. Lyons Elementary School, 7555 E. Dogwood:

Through Oct. 25: Counselors will present lessons to K- 3 students on making wise choices, resisting peer pressure and coping schools
Oct. 25: 8:15 a.m. Red Ribbon Celebration Assembly featuring UA athletes

A fifth grade class will present a skit

K-3rd graders will sing songs about peer pressure and coping

3. Townsend Middle School, 2120 N. Beverly Blvd.:

Oct. 22: TPD assemblies for 7th and 8th graders
Oct. 23: Drug Awareness assemblies for 6th graders
Oct. 24: Assemblies for 6th, 7th and 8th graders featuring Crystal Woodman, Columbine survivor

9 a.m. – 6th graders
10 a.m. – 7th and 8th graders

4. Gridley Middle School, 350 S. Harrison Rd.

Oct. 24: 8:15 a.m. Red Ribbon Assembly featuring UA students and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers representatives.
9:15 – 11:30 a.m. Healthy Living Fair

5. Gale Elementary School, 678 S. Gollob Rd.:

Through Oct. 25: Students will wear red ribbons throughout the week
Oct. 22: 6 p.m. Parent Safety Night

6. Blenman Elementary School, 1695 N. Country Club:

Oct. 28: Students will wear neckties for "Tie One On Against Drugs" day
Oct. 29: Students will wear hats for "Put a Cap on Drugs" day
Oct. 30: Students will wear crazy socks for "Sock It To Drugs" day
Oct. 31: Students will wear red, white and blue clothing for "United We Stand for a Drug Free Land" day
Nov. 1: Students will wear their favorite team jerseys for "Team Up Against Drugs" day
At the end of each day, 10 students who wear their red ribbons will be selected to receive a prize. Student council members will create school spirit posters to hang in the school. School counselor Viola Pace will implement anti-drug awareness lessons for students.

7. Sewell Elementary School, 425 N. Sahuara:

Through Oct. 25: Sewell will have ongoing weekly guidance lessons that will focus on anti-bullying strategies.

8. Hohokam Middle School, 7400 S. Settler Rd.:

Oct. 22: Assembly for 6th graders on drug awareness by the Drexel Fire Department.
Oct. 23: Teachers will decorate halls and rooms with anti-drug posters
Oct. 24: Assembly for 8th graders featuring motivational group The Funkamentals.
Nov. 1: First quarter awards assembly with Red Ribbon Week messages.

9. Smith Elementary School, 5741 E. Ironwood:

Oct. 25: All grades will compete in a poster and essay contest throughout the week. Winners will be announced that day.

9 a.m. – students will march through the school community and will return to the school playground where they will form the words "Say No" in red and black. A Davis Monthan photographer will take an overhead picture while hoisted on a bucket truck.

10. Schumaker Elementary School, 501 N. Maguire:

Oct. 23: Elks Club members will distribute red ribbons
Oct. 28: UA athletes will discuss drug awareness at assemblies

12:45 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. for K-2nd graders
1:15 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. for 3rd – 5th graders
Students will wear red ribbons all day

Oct. 29: Students will wear their favorite team jersey for "Team Up Against Drugs" day
Oct. 30: Students will wear red white and blue for "Red, White and Blue" day

11. Mansfeld Middle School, 1300 E. Sixth St.:

Oct. 28: Teachers will read the story behind Red Ribbon week

Student council members will distribute red ribbons to all students.

Oct. 31: Essays on the importance of staying drug free are due. Winners will be announced.

12. Keen Elementary School, 3538 E. Ellington Pl.:

Oct. 21-Oct. 25: Counselors will present lessons about staying drug free. Students will be given red ribbons and making red and white "choose peace not drugs" chains to hang in their classrooms as a reminder.
Oct. 25: 8:15 a.m. An all school assembly will be held in the school’s patio. The "Best Peace Keeper" award will be given.
6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fun Night celebration

13. Van Buskirk Elementary School, 1300 E. Sixth St.:

Oct. 28: Students will wear neck times for "Tie One On Against Drugs" day.
Oct. 29: Students will wear hats for "Put a Cap on Drugs" day.
Oct. 30: Students will wear crazy socks for "Sock It To Drugs" day.
Oct. 31: Students will wear read, white and blue clothing for "United We Stand for a Drug-Free Land" day.
Nov. 1: Students will wear their favorite team’s jersey for "Team Up Against Drugs"

14. Jefferson Park Elementary School, 1701 E. Seneca:

Oct. 1 – Oct. 31: Teachers have been focusing on teaching prevention based lessons, decision-making skills and the Enrique Camarena story.

15. Lynn/Urquides Elementary 1573 W. Ajo Way

Oct. 22 – Oct. 25: PA announcements regarding drug awareness.
Oct. 22: Ribbon tying activities

16. Utterback Magnet School Activities, 3233 S. Pinal Vista:

Oct. 22: Students will wear special articles of clothing throughout the week in conjunction with daily themes such as team jerseys or school colors on Tuesday Oct. 22 (Team Up Against drugs); red, white and blue clothing on Wednesday Oct. 23 (United We Stand for a Drug Free Land); wear neckties and/or crazy or mismatched on Thursday Oct. 24 (Tie One on Against Drugs and/or Sock It To Drugs); and wear hats on Friday Oct. 25 (Put a Cap on Drugs).

17. Howenstine High Magnet School, 555 S. Tucson Blvd.:

Oct. 22: Red Ribbon Day
Oct. 23: School Colors Day
Oct. 24: (Backwards Day) Turn Your Back on Drugs Day
Oct. 25: (Wear Ties) Tie One on Against Drugs
