Schools Earn Money While Saving TUSD About $1M in Utility Costs

Forty-one TUSD schools recently saved the district $936,830 in total utility costs for the 2005 fiscal year by reducing energy, water, and waste costs through the district’s
Resources Efficiency Awareness Program, also known as REAP. In addition to saving the district money, 32 schools earned a total of
$27,250 for demonstrating conservation, improving efficiency, and using renewable resources from
July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005.
Begun in 1991, REAP was created to educate students and staff about conserving energy, water, and waste resources. It awards winning schools twice per year with amounts of up to $5,000 of capital monies which can be spent on a variety of school supplies including playground equipment, cafeteria tables, etc. The amount of money awarded is determined by the amount of money a school saves on utilities, if the school has received an Energy Star label from the federal government, and if conservation is included in the school's curriculum.
