Thanks to Oasis tutor and mentor George Perlmutter, also known as “George the Stamp Man,” Pizza Hut of Arizona will treat about 80 second-grade students at
Roberts Elementary School, 4355 E. Calle Aurora, to a pizza party from
1:30 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, in the school’s outdoor patio
area.
A representative of Xstamper and Spectra Office Stamps, Mr. Perlmutter has been tutoring 12 to 15 students in reading at Roberts since January 2005 through Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring, which serves several TUSD schools. Pizza Hut of Arizona is one of Mr. Perlmutter’s stamp clients and offered to sponsor the pizza party when he acquainted the company with his tutoring endeavors at Roberts. Such volunteer efforts by Mr. Perlmutter and other community members have greatly assisted the school in attaining Adequate Yearly Progress under federal guidelines and achieving a Performing Plus profile through Arizona LEARNS.
Noted for its excellent, award-winning training for tutors, Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program matches trained volunteers with students in grades K-3 who need help developing reading and language skills. Volunteers work one-on-one with the child, during the school day, as a tutor, mentor and friend. Through the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program, volunteers, schools and OASIS work together to help young children build reading skills and positive attitudes toward learning.
